Leveraging Forensic Data Analysis Techniques

Presented by:

Mark D. Mayberry, CPA.CITP, CISA and

Sheryl Skolnik

October 28, 2009, 2:00pm-3:30pm ET

The massive financial accounting scandals of the early 2000s and impending investigations into the collapse of AIG, Lehman Bros., Washington Mutual and others brought on by the current financial crisis have spurred a growing interest in the use of forensic accounting techniques. At the same time, auditors are still grappling with the implications of SAS 99, which greatly expanded the auditor’s responsibilities with respect to fraud and its potential impact on the financial statements.

As the standards and the current climate are demanding more from auditors and forensic experts, CPAs are experiencing mounting pressure to increase audit efficiency and reduce cost. Furthermore, the current economic outlook may motivate companies to fraudulently improve their financial performance.

In the IT Community web seminar, Leveraging Forensic Data Analysis Techniques, Mark Mayberry and Sheryl Skolnik of BDO Seidman LLP discuss the application of computer analytics or Computer Assisted Auditing Tools and Techniques (CAATTs) to detect evidence of fraud and financial statement manipulation. Using actual CAATTs applications, they demonstrate powerful techniques that can reduce reliance on sampling, greatly increasing audit effectiveness and efficiency while minimizing audit risk.
