In the digital age, information has become a valuable business asset; one that business’s leverage to create value and competitive advantage. Like a business’s “hard” assets, information is vulnerable to loss, damage and misuse, and must be properly managed to minimize risk. Good managers understand that they have a fiduciary responsibility to protect company information, and are aware of the great losses that misappropriation of information and abuse of the access rights can cause. They try to anticipate risk, but generally deal with threats in limited and uncoordinated ways. More often than not management becomes preoccupied with external threats, and fails to protect information from unauthorized access and misappropriation by the employees, consultants, contractors and other internal users who pose the greatest threat. A few precautions - employee handbooks discussing proper usage and handling of company information and confidentiality agreements placing contractual obligations on employees - are standard. Many companies take these basic steps, but most go no further.
What is needed is genuine collaboration between business executives, legal council, HR management and IT consultants in developing and executing a comprehensive, multifaceted approach to safeguarding information; an integrated information protection plan that incorporates sound IT policy, effective human resource management, IT controls and continuous monitoring and oversight.
In Safeguarding Information Assets Part I, CPA.CITP Bob Green, and attorneys Glenn Dickenson and Karen Gabler provide an orientation to insider-borne risks to critical business information and explain why internal risk needs to be addressed NOW with strong executive commitment. Drawing on both legal and IT approached, they map out a comprehensive strategy for managing the behavior of insiders from hire through day-to-day employment to help reduce the risk of loss, and ensure that valuable information assets are adequately protected.

Karen is the former Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Ventura County, and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board Development Committee. She is the Chair Elect of the Board of Directors for the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Simi Valley Education Foundation and the Simi Valley Community Foundation.
She practiced law in Honolulu, Hawaii for four years before moving her practice to California in 1996, and she is actively licensed to practice in the state and federal courts of California and Hawaii.
